    Description
?I am advised by Richard Ellis, my expert in all matters relating to cups and canteens, that this is an ORIGINAL and RARE Model 1902 wetting cup used by saddlers of the U.S. Cavalry at the turn of the 20th century. The cup has a rust patina over all it's surfaces, but is otherwise in GOOD used condition.  The bottom of the cup has impressed into it the letters "US".  One other reference work has also referred to this cup as the "Model 1903."
Richard stated that something like this cup is shown next to a sponge in the 1916 Quartermaster catalog and is believed by most collectors to have been "experimental" (although he doesn't necessarily concur in that opinion).  He went on to state that it was common practice by saddlers to wet the leather while working it (cutting, edging, sewing, etc.) and he thinks that this cup was used to hold water for that purpose.  A similar cup, sometimes tinned and sometimes porcelain-plated, was later purchased in quantity in 1917-18 to supply camps with mess equipment. So, let the buyer be the judge.  What do you think?
Feel free to contact me through the eBay message system with your thoughts.
So, here's an opportunity for the U.S. cavalry collector to obtain a M1902 "experimental" cup for the collection.  The buyer will have my usual unconditional guarantee of authenticity and satisfaction and a five-day (
not the 14-days which eBay inserts in my listings without my consent
) right of inspection and return/refund privilege, excluding postage.
