Established on May 6, 1901 by decree of Emperor Nicholas II. The decree was given to the Minister of War A. N. Kuropatkin. The medal had two main options, made of different metals: silver or bronze.
Medals of different metals were awarded to different categories of the awardees. The silver version was intended to reward all persons who directly participated in the hostilities. The participants in the defense of Harbin and Blagoveshchensk, participants in the capture of Taku, Tien Jin, Beijing and participants in other episodes of suppressing the uprising were awarded. In addition to regular military personnel, awards were given to volunteers, railroad guards, as well as priests, doctors and officials who served in military units. The light bronze version of the medal was relied on to all military personnel who did not take a direct part in the battles, but who were serving in the active armies on the territory of China, as well as in areas in which martial law was declared. Similarly with the silver version of the medal, in addition to the military, officials, volunteers, priests, doctors were awarded if these persons were on duty with the troops, medical institutions, etc.
The medal is made from one of two metals: silver or bronze. Diameter 28 mm. The obverse of the medal depicts the embossed monogram of Emperor Nicholas II, which is an ornate letter "H", under which is the letter "ΙΙ". The Great Imperial Crown is depicted above the monogram.
On the reverse side, along the edge, there is a circular inscription:
« ЗА ПОХОДЪ ВЪ КИТАЙ »
    .
In the center there is an inscription “1900-1901” horizontally. In the lower part of the reverse side there is a rifle with a bayonet crossed with a saber and a vertically positioned anchor. The main edition was made at the St. Petersburg Mint. The release of medals by private workshops was allowed. These medals may differ in details of the image; light and dark bronze, silver, light metal could be used as a material.
Subsequently, the design of the medal was used for the unapproved medal "For the campaign to Japan" (1906)
The medal had an eyelet for attaching to a block or tape. The medal should be worn on the chest. The ribbon of the medal is the connected Andreevsko-Vladimirskaya.
By decree of Nicholas II, issued on August 13, 1911, soldiers and officers who were wounded or concussed during the hostilities were able to wear these medals on ribbons with a bow.
