    Description

    Model 1909 Infantry Canteen
Original US Army Model 1909 Infantry canteen, standard M1902 type canteen body [tin plated steel with pewter spout, cork with steel top/pull ring and brass chain, and center impression on back], but was made without triangular strap rings on sides, as this version utilized the standard canvas cover with a web hanger strap permanently sewn on back. Cover and strap are made of light OD green ["pea green"] canvas and webbing which was the primary US web gear color from about 1910 to 1917, and are sewn with khaki stitching. Wool lining is beneath the canvas cover. Cover is well marked IOWA and R.I.A. 1914 on front. By this time, the M1910 canteen had become standard for the Regular Army, but many National Guard units continued to use the older model. This would be the last version of the oblate-spheroid canteen which had been standard US military issue since shortly before the Civil War.
Very light age soiling to upper front of cover, but nothing affecting overall appearance and no tears, holes, fraying, or other damage to cover or hanger strap. Light surface rust to steel top and pull ring on cork, otherwise undamaged. No dents or other damage to spout or canteen body. Nice clean example of a short-lived canteen and is in very fine condition. Any questions please feel free to ask.
